I was reading a discussion of an acting topic regarding the usefulness of IMDB and someone mentioned that IMDB Pro is a great resource for screenwriters because they can access a lot of information about production companies? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I have IMDBPro think its a wonderful resource to really look up information on production companies, see rankings and also a great source of entertainment news. They have a lot of the newest stories in one place from all of the major publications and film sites/blogs which is great. I say try it out or check out someone that has IMDBpro I'm sure they'll let you check it out. :)
I have IMDbPro and it's a great tool as an actor - it also gives me some credibility as a writer and any other hat I want to wear- Casting Directors in Canada and US are starting to use IMDbPro as a resume/photos/video clips resource and we have been told by casting if you want be taken seriously as an actor in Vancouver you need to have it- as we seem to be moving away from hard copy headshots and everything is becoming digitized - and online - it's about 128 bucks for the year which seems pretty reasonable and I like to check the ProSites of directors who want to see me for projects - quite frankly if they don't have a ProSite I don't take them very seriously so I would see a writer the same way - and IMDb credits are currency at least here in Canada.
It can be an asset, But like everything else it is just a tool, and what you get out of it is going to correspond to what you put into it. I know from my experience just some of the discussions on there by themselves can be a viable resource to learning about the industry.
