Writers, may I ask something here? I understand that for screenwriters, craft and mastery come first. But at the same time, we all need to eat. If it’s not a secret — are scripts paid well enough? Does it cover at least bread and butter? Or do screenwriters often live on the edge of hunger?

Some producers pay more for projects than other producers, Aleksandr Rozhnov. Producers who are making micro-budget projects won't be able to pay as much as producers who are making low-budget, mid-budget, or big-budget projects.
Some writers are in the WGA, so they get paid a certain amount.
And some writers get paid less up front and receive profits on the backend.
A lot of times, writers aren't paid enough.

The financial reality for screenwriters is harsh and unforgiving. Most screenwriters struggle financially, and many maintain day jobs throughout their careers.
The brutal economics:
Working writers are rare. The WGA has about 12,000 members, but only 40-50% work in any given year. Of those who do work, median earnings hover around $60,000-80,000 annually - but that's only for writers who actually sell something.
Feast or famine cycles. A writer might earn $100,000 from a script sale, then nothing for two years. Budgeting becomes impossible when income is unpredictable.
Spec work pays nothing. Writers spend months or years developing scripts with no guarantee of payment. The majority of completed screenplays never earn a dollar.
Competition is extreme. Thousands of writers compete for limited paying opportunities. Even talented writers often go years between paid assignments.
Geographic constraints. Most TV writing requires Los Angeles residence, where living costs consume larger portions of any earnings.
The uncomfortable truth: Many screenwriters live paycheck to paycheck, rely on spousal income, work survival jobs, or come from financial privilege that allows them to write unpaid for extended periods.
Some writers do achieve financial stability through consistent TV work or franchise projects, but they represent a small percentage of those attempting screenwriting careers.
The industry's structure inherently favors those who can afford to work for free while pursuing breakthrough opportunities.

Yes, you can make a modest to excellent living doing this but it takes a plan and a certain attitude and disposition.
