Screenwriting : Teach me, Obi Wan Kenobi (beat) or Darth Maul... by Max Boyce

Max Boyce

Teach me, Obi Wan Kenobi (beat) or Darth Maul...

Or any screenwriter... Tell me about (beat). I write fiction novels, shot stories and I use the ellipsis ( ... OR .... ) to indicate time passage or a short break or a hanging pause in my literary trifles. How do you film makers (and Wookies) feel about pause deliminators (beat, ellipsis or 'm' dash) in scripts? Serious question and may the force of fiction be with you!

Scott Luper

I use (beat) during phone calls where you only hear one side of the conversation. I'd seen a John August script that used it and liked it. *** If I remember correctly the script was "The Nines".

Max Boyce

I'll check it out. I'm writing away on a script as I write this... ooops! Too much caffeine again... writing three things at once. WHen will i learn?

Vonnie Davis

I use ... or (BEAT) I never heard of the 'm' dash you mentioned.

Max Boyce

'em' dash is — on the mac option/shift/dash :[1] [Em dash:] In matters of grave importance, style—not sincerity—is the vital thing. [En dash:] In matters of grave importance, style – not sincerity – is the vital thing. The en dash (but not the em dash) is also used to indicate spans or differentiation, where it may be considered to replace and or to:[2] The French and Indian War (1754–1763) was fought in western Pennsylvania and along the present US–Canadian border (Edwards, pp. 81–101).
