Screenwriting : What makes a great character? by John Radtke

What makes a great character?

Who is your favorite character from film/tv? What makes them a great character?

Michael L. Burris

"Frank Barone" from "Everybody Loves Raymond". Sense of timing much like Carson, crude like "Archie Bunker" another great character from "All In the Family" Sidenote: "All In the Family" has a lot to do with the history of the Nicholl Fellowship. In my opinion the timing of the paradigm of television's allowance of more "risque" material was perfect for Don and Gee Nicholl who were British. In hindsight I really think "All In the Family" was somewhat of a British humor format with an American spin or overtone. When revisiting or reexamining this show you can kind of see the British undertone of humor when aware of who some of the writers were. We also can never forget who the iconic "Michael Stivic" meathead character is. Cultural senstivities sure have changed the way humor is portrayed nowadays. In a way it's shameful to have to walk on eggshells and in a way it's progressive. Globalization has enhanced a lot in media but at the same time it has crushed some focus area's. I guess it's kind of like the line from another old sitcom theme song which resonates. "You take the good, you take the bad and then you have THE FACTS OF LIFE." Sorry if I got off on a tangent there, most of my thought processes naturally do but it's just who I am. Michael L. Burris "Life is way too short not too look at the lighter side of it." & "I'm trying my damnedest not to fly around like a blind bird."

Shaun O'Banion

Indiana Jones and John McClane (at least in the first film) - What makes them great? They're human. Fallible. Despite doing extraordinary things.

Pierre Langenegger

I don't really have a favorite as there are so many great characters but I loved Walter Bishop from Fringe. I also agree with a lot of those already mentioned.

Pierre Langenegger

Oops, can't edit via phone app but I also wanted to add that his character had a lot of depth and was quite quirky.

Cherie Grant

I think great characters have great insight.

Andrew Pritzker

Walter White from 'Breaking Bad' is a deeply engaging character because of his flaws, aspirations, and moral conflicts. He's a desperate character whose life is ticking away. He's ruthless, sympathetic, and unpredictable. That's a great character.

Shawn Speake

Torn between Heath Ledgers' Joker, Al Pacino's Scarface, and Bryan Cranston's Walter White. Their dark side is so… dark!
