The Truman Show is one of my favorite movies not only because Jim Carrey is a versatile actor but because sometimes, as a writer, we all feel trapped in a world we've become accustomed to where we're accepted and liked by everyone. A world we know isn't reality, but we're afraid of what lies beyond. Outside those walls lies a scary unpredictable world, one where criticism and cynicism are rampant. Is it introverted to realize the recipe that keeps your self esteem and confidence intact and to protect it? A a writer, I find its most important to protect your mind, the engine of creativity. You can't allow yourself to be removed from your inspiration where self esteem and confidence are often the key ingredients.

I work more on being consistent. Often enough, I'm not inspired to write. I have to approach it like work and operate with the goal of taking on challenges. However, writers that want to have their work optioned or made into films can not live in an insulated world. If you put your work out there you're going to be criticized and subject to readers who are cynical or burned out. Or deal with producers that want to put their stamp on your work or worse yet, shape their crappy ideas into a feature script. I started three spec gigs this year that began with ideas brought to me by producers/film makers where I decided to complete the material even though I didn't continue to work with any of these people. Since I had no NDA's or agreements with the folks, it was my choice to finish what I started. In all three cases I'm glad I did. Confidence rises and falls with your successes and failures. The ultimate need to continue writing regardless of either of the aforementioned outcomes determines the mettle of the artist.

Hey, Phillip, yes I agree with your mindset, sometimes you have to approach it like work - one is still inspired to a degree, but the approach is workmanlike and also to degree, "business" - at least it is for me - keep writing, kid, you do good work and deserve any success that comes your way.
