Tell me what you think

Innocent guilt - Is a drama/comedy TV show about an unapologetic man who makes bad decisions but for, what he believes are for the right reasons. He notice a problem, tries to find a solution to fix it but all he is really doing is adding to the previous problem. For instance, he cheats on his wife of five years because she doesn't cook, clean, have sex, dress up anymore and rather stay in the house. He have brought it to her attention numerous of times but it doesn't change anything so he cheats on her with a man. Once she finds out, he explains to her that although he loves her dearly, he isn't sorry for cheating on her. He don't have any feelings for the man and that he is only having fun with him until the woman that he married comes back around. Other episodes ideas - (1) He begins to steal from his job because he is having financial problems and don't think anyone would notices. (2) He then loses his job, don't tell his wife, but get up every morning as if he still has a job. (3) Then he decides to join the Army for the pay benefits, he tells his wife that he has to go away for two weeks for job related and later calls her while in Basic Training to let him know that he joined the Army.

Why would your protagonist marry such a person in the first place if she doesn't do all that you have listed? What was her appeal to him that made him want to marry her?

No disrespect intended, but at a time when Hollywood is being petitioned to generate more roles for women, and that portray women in a (hopefully) more positive light, I think if I pitched an idea about a woman who is slovenly at home; sexually frigid to her husband; and all-around lazy (or deeply psychologically affected, which someone like this no doubt is), and which then causes her husband to become an unrepentant sinner and to have an affair with a man, I'd probably get a "pass." I do love well-executed triangle lust stories, though, and get your idea about being put in a position to do something wrong based on current circumstances. "Victim of circumstances" has always been an interesting theme to explore, and the complications that arise as a result of that situation. The psychological aspect of his reality, her reality, and maybe the other person in the affair are massive minefields to explore. That's where the heart and soul of infidelity stories usually bear the most fruit. Once an affair is consummated, everything usually changes (and especially if you love your spouse), unless someone is able to block that out; bargain within himself/herself in order to justify it and cope; and/or live in denial. But even those results beget new changes, too. I do like the four examples you have, and the idea of a progression of changes in their lives, but at some point....that could be a bit....I don't know....limiting? Have you thought about an anthology series where it's new characters with a new set of problems every week? Good luck, Ashley!

Dan - Thanks for your honesty. It was just an idea.

Jim- She didn't know he was going to turn out like this. At first the marriage started out like every other marriage and what she thought was "happily ever after" took a turn when she stopped doing the things that brought them together i.e. Having sex on the regular, cleaning up, and keeping herself presentable.

Bill- I love construction criticism so I didn't take your comment has disrespectful. I would rather someone tell me the truth that way I can make changes to it or just throw it in the trash. I really appreciate what you said it really do mean a lot!!!!!

Jim - Sorry that first Jim was for Christopher! Thanks for your feedback!

Bill Costantini

Ashley - thanks for the compliment. That really made me feel good. Owen - Great point. You're absolutely right. Execution is what makes us laugh at scary stories like Snatch, The Cable Guy, Fargo and American Psycho. I think dark comedies/comedy tragedies are probably the hardest thing to write, at least for me.
