I'll be graduating high school in June, and I've started hearing back from colleges. I was wondering if anyone here had any input into the pros v. cons of going to film school or not based on their personal experience. I'm just considering all my options — any input is welcome!
I cant cite pros and cons about film school vs no school, but I will say education is never a waste and a degree of any kind will open doors for you in the job market that would be closed for others.
My son is planning to major in film as well. We can't afford one of the "big hitter" schools (USC, UCLA) and he is actually more interested in a smaller, more low key school at this point. He may transfer to a bigger school later.
What I tell him is this; there are many facets of film production, many different kinds of jobs in the industry. Going to film school will give you access and education for those different jobs, as well as opportunities for internships at major studios (many only consider current college students). And if, down the road, working in film didn't pan out or you decided you want to do something else, you still have a degree, which is required for many entry level jobs in different fields nowadays.
Good luck to you! What schools are you considering?

Thanks Jody. I applied to some of the bigger schools, like USC and NYU, but I probably won't get the money for them. Right now, It's looking like it'd be Rutgers new film program out of Mason Gross, which definitely looked interesting from the times I visited.
