Acting : Bad Guy Casting by Caldwell Butler

Bad Guy Casting

This is more of a curiosity than anything else. One of my dreams as a filmmaker is to be cast in a background 2nd- or 3rd-tier bad guy role in an action movie or a western. Like a “Gunman #2” kind of role, of one those who shows up in the shootout and immediately gets killed. That’d be amazing. Has anyone here ever done that? How does the casting process for that kind of role work?

As an actor, I can tell you that tons of feature films look for extras everyday. You don't even have to have acting experience. I'm on my third extra role in 3 months, and I live in Syracuse. They shoot tons of features here.

Get in with area acting/filming Facebook groups. It seems the background and principal opportunities are typically posted in these groups. And check the newspaper for stories on features being shot in your area.

Once you see an opportunity that matches what you want, then respond to the emails and audition. You could let the casting director know you want to be a bad guy that gets killed! I work with a lot of great casting directors that are very friendly and appreciate the background extra work.

Hey Caldwell it sounds like you might want to look at stunt acting, the guys in big movies that take the bullet are generally stunt men who also do cameo roles, I've acted with weapons on a few movies some big some small, they are always have weapon experts on hand to guide the actors, on the bigger productions some stunt men have had a small role with weapons, I hope this helps Jay Croot
