Anything Goes : Film Schools by June Freddie

Film Schools

I don’t know if this topic has been discussed but what is the opinion on film schools? Asset or time waste? I’ve read opinions arguing both sides but am still on the fence. What do you guys think?

Dan MaxXx

It’s USC film school or bust.

Seriously, what’s the hurry to get a job? Most people go to college in their early 20s, figuring out what to do for a living.

If you have skills to work (paid jobs), do it.

Well, I’m in my late 30s. And my question had more to do with what stands out more on a resume. I know that experience is always a good thing to have on your resume but what if you have a degree in film but little to no experience in the field? Should I spend my time going to school while I have my full time job (not in the film industry) or should I skip film school, keep my job, and try to find an internship with a production studio instead? Which holds more value?

There are pros & cons to both sides of that coin. Since you're in your late 30s and have a career under way; that's a valuable asset - don't lose it. I see that you're in FL. Should you decide that you want to go to a top-O-the line film school (eg, USC) you would have to forfeit your career in FL and start over in CA (more expensive) to attend film school with a bunch of kids for a 'maybe' new career in film. Don't think I'd do that. But, there are Indie Filmmakers in FL that need all the help they can get - a win/win situation for you & them. You gain the experience you desire. Remember, nobody in Hollywood hires from a resume anyway. You might find it appealing to help expand the Indie Film Industry right there in FL (where you already have a base). But what the hell do I know - best wishes for whatever you decide.

Thank you. I actually started school in Oct but so far it’s just general classes and I don’t really feel I am getting much out of it. As far as Indie Films, I’ll try to find some in my area for now. There is also a possibility that I am moving to either Atlanta or Cali in Aug. I would like to be in an area that has a lot of opportunities, Indie or otherwise. Thanks all for the advice. It was truly helpful.

I agree with @Doug. Pros and Cons. I still make student films at film schools because although I already can “Direct” I do not know how to make a film “Hands On Technically”. I am doing a couple of Pro films out In Andalucia but the hired crew are on hand, and I am solely absorbed in controlling the thoughts and feelings of the characters. However, last year I did another student film because I was learning a new tool in JUXTAPOSITION with directing. I do not think ANY AGE is too late to learn. We cannot live in a stale groove, but at the same time need to reap some pay off for time out, albeit not money.
