Acting : Self-taping by Robert Hyacinth

Self-taping

Hi Community,

I have a question for one and all. When making a self-tape, would you say that it is best to be standing, sitting or does it make a difference?

I would appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Kind Regards

Robert

You should be doing what the character is doing, IMHO.

I had actors do self-tapes for a production and the character was standing/walking. One of the actors who submitted chose to sit at a desk. He was also wearing a suit, and the character was wearing a Members Only jacket and kangol. It turned me off. I figured if he couldn't take the time to make the self-tape as authentic to the script as possible, he wopuldn't take the time on set, either.

Just my take.

Here's a great post by @Matthew Cornwell about self tapes:

Hi Im with Joleene. Do what is NATURAL to Character.

Coming from 2 places, I guess that's what I need to do. Thanks Debbie

I personally stand. Unless the script says the character is sitting. Bc your posture slumps over when you sit and standing keeps your chest up. Your also doing a close up shot of you so they can’t see if your sitting down unless it’s a wider shot.

I would add to Debbie's comment that you should also consider the position that best puts you in the moment. Sometimes we can be more grounded in one position.
