Screenwriting : A Winner at a Film Festival by Sally J. Walker

A Winner at a Film Festival

As some of you know, I teach screenwriting and have written two screenwriting textbooks. I taught screenwriting at the college level from Fall 2017 through Spring 2020. One of my students in the 2020 Spring Term, Brigitte Timmerman, wrote her first narrative feature scripts for that class titled "The Refuge." I am very proud to announce this past weekend that script won the Screenplay Grand Jury Prize (and $1,000) in the Tahoe-Reno Cordillero International Film Festival. "The Refuge" is a story of Native Americans "getting it right" in a futuristic dystopian USA. Unknown to Brigitte, one of the jury judges was NA actor-director Wes Studi. Serendipity. Prior to this script, Brigitte had only written and produced documentaries. Her most recent one, "Omaha Speaking", received several film festival awards and the prestigious Documentary Western Heritage Award in 2019.

Hi Sally,

That is wonderful news for Brigitte, and major kudos to her!

You should post here more often. You're quite acclaimed yourself, and anyone who has any first-hand Lew Wasserman stories to share would grab my attention.

Best fortunes to Brigitte and to you Sally, and stay safe!

Teachers are gold. We don’t pay them enough. Great teachers are super important as they can make

more money doing so many things other than teaching. They deserve our respect and praise.

PS Congrats to your student.
