Hey so working on a new script and there's a portion of it that showcases scenes from an original musical. I'm writing the lyrics (in italics when the characters are singing) but I realize I've never actually known... do I have to write the song or actually more accurately in this case find someone to write the songs, or can I just not worry about it for now? I can just do the lyrics, right? Tune in my head, hum it to whomever asks I suppose? I don't know how to write music is why I'm asking :D

To move your efforts forward, I would write the lyrics and worry about collaborating with someone to write the full songs later.

Chazelle asked his longtime friend to write the lyrics/music for La La Land.
Search Linda Woolverton on youtube. She's got lots of advice on writing musicals.

Write the lyrics and don’t worry about the music or the melody. Think like a librettist, who writes the words of an opera with character and narrative in mind, then hands his or her words over to a composer who will take care of the rest. You may well be asked to hum something later. :)
I often put arrangements on the songs such as Traditional Folk,Piano and strings etc and no one who's read it has complained. Not that makes it right.I'll post a few pages of a first draft I'm writing I haven't even spell checked it but at least shows what I mean.
Finaly worked out how to share pdf.
4 images from within the same script showing how I format songs to make it clear to the reader the musical intent.
