Writing a world war 2 script!

Hey everybody, I'm working on a fictional WW2 feature paying tribute to Nurses during the war. My main question is, when writing a fictional story but using actually battles and units do I need permission to use the units names and number? Or do I need to make up fictional unit numbers? I know it's pretty broad question but have at it!

I wouldn't think so. That's all a matter of public record but you could change them if you wanted (I think it would weaken the story). Is this a fictional documentary of The Nurses or is it a docudrama following the trials and tribulations of one nurse in theater? To me, that would be the stronger way of dealing with the theme - but its your story.
