Introduce Yourself : Emerging Writer by Patrick Hercules

Patrick Hercules

Emerging Writer

My name is Patrick and I am an emerging writer from NYC. I graduated in December 2019 with a degree in screenwriting. Since then, I've been teaching myself how to write for television. I've been learning a lot and writing as much as I can. I have written a feature, two comedy pilots (working on a sci-fi drama pilot), three short films, two spec scripts, two sketches, and a couple of one act plays. I have been networking as I try to find a writing job on my way to breaking into the industry.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hey, Patrick Hercules! My name is Kay, I'm the Community Manager here at Stage 32. Nice to meet you and welcome to the community! If you'd like to learn more about myself and the Stage32 Team, we have an intro blog: https://www.stage32.com/blog/Meet-the-Stage-32-Team

Love your initiative - teaching yourself anything is a great indicator that you're in it for the right reasons! Where are you at in your writing? Are you in need of feedback before your next revision or are you ready to start submitting to contests or pitching to executives? Definitely reach out to our Director of Script Services, Jason Mirch, who is excellent at matching projects with potential executives (or managers, in your case): J.Mirch@stage32.com

I’m sure you’ve already discovered the Screenwriting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting), but definitely reach out on the Acting Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/acting) for insight into characters, dialogue, and even when you want to generate interest in a virtual table read!

Keep in mind that these lounges are like the VIP Filmmaker's Lounges at Film Festivals, so this is where you can meet the people doing the work, get advice on anything you're working on, and/or give back to those who may need advice. We're a very supportive and encouraging community! I think you'd also enjoy my intro blog post on how to engage with the Stage32 Community:

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect! And, of course, feel free to reach out at any time. Cheers!

Hey Karen, I'm writing for submissions to writing mentorship and fellowship programs. I'm currently working on a spec for ViacomCBS's writing program and an application for the WGA writer's assistant program. I have submitted to a contest before last year early in the stages of writing my first comedy pilot. Most recently, I submitted to two contest a couple of weeks ago.

Right now, I'm trying to work on my own projects while building a portfolio for potential writing jobs. But I'm honestly not sure where my focus should be right now. Should I be writing to enter contests, or writing to pitch to executives, or writing to get staffed in a writer's room? The latter is where I want to be honestly. To be a working writer. And in all honesty I need a guide. Someone to help guide me on this journey and put/keep me on the right track.

I've spoken to Jason before and he was very helpful. I will reach out again and look into the lounges.

James Welday

Welcome Patrick, happy to network!
