Financing / Crowdfunding : Work outside the "Usual" Channels. by Michael Kuper

Work outside the "Usual" Channels.

Anyone who has tried to get money raised for a film has usually ran into more walls then entrances that are welcoming. I've done it all from crowdfunding, working with previous producers that I've built relationships with as well as others new to the industry that want to be involved in a project but only have x,y,z to contribute. The one thing I learned is looking outside the usual channels that people expect or are "allowed' in the industry, because so many people use these avenues, it cuts down on the likelihood of your project getting the attention it deserves.

I've instead shifted my motivation to finding other sources of funding that I personally am in control of, whether thats a side business or something else. I used the pandemic to test out this theory so that while im writing, I can be generating funds that can be used either for a project or put aside as I start up my production company. I was able to get involved in buying/reselling of merchandise that is sought after and raised $28,000 in six months. Realizing that this is MUCH easier than hoping people will give you money, I simply learned a craft and TOOK the money.

Its easy to get discouraged because like anything, the first step is usually the hardest and most unsure, but once you get involved, learn, watch and see what's going on...it becomes much easier. I've always been one to take what I want...because waiting around, or asking for favors does not always prove to be effective. So if you're not sure on how/when/where to raise money, I suggest looking outside the box and see if you are able to use a skillset or ability that may not exactly be in the industry but can help generate the income you want in order to use that towards your project etc. It helps you raise some on your own because just like anything else, if you build it they will come.

That's one hell of a way to do it...nicely done :)

True, are you talking about Amazon reselling and bit coin is another way, all risky but doable.

What's the "usual channel"? Someone giving you plenty money because they're transfixed of your project? Highly doubt this is the way it goes...even in post communist states like mine, where we have these golden geese named film funds...there's always politics, ties, interests etc. included way before u get the money...making movie's criminal...I mean sometimes down to busts, investigations...

I agree with you Michael. I fund my own project. One project at a time and save for the next bigger project. I was advised not to barrow money when doing film. It is a risky step.
