It's not up to directors. It's up to distributors, and basically, with cinema attendance falling steadily for 30+ years now, now still 68% below pre-covid levels and not bouncing back - it's not what it used to be. If it ever was. Theatrical was always a zero-sum game and major studios still use that fact to control market share. Also, distribution channels have moved on and away from theatrical releasing - which is actually quite expensive to do. So, while all of us love the idea of seeing our work on the big screen, the economics of it and the audience desires don't necessarily warrant it.
