Curiosity Makes Cinematographers...

That was actually meant as a statement, but let's play that game, too! Complete the sentence, "Curiosity makes cinematographers..."

I've been obsessing over this fantastic interview with Zendaya hosted by Issa Rae, and I was particularly surprised to hear that she started learning about cinematography while on the set of Euphoria. What piqued your curiosity for cinematography?

Lewis Martin Soucy

Curiosity makes cinematographers learn, I guess, which takes me to your second question: What piqued my curiosity for cinematography? The frustration of depending on someone else to shoot my films and having to constantly explain what's in my head without ever getting it right from them, lol.

I can see that, Lewis Martin Soucy, and what a fantastically DP response to why you DP! LOL! I once had a student who was very clearly a budding DP and on his final he and the director were struggling to delegate tasks. When it came time to figure out why it was that this was such a problem, he just said, "I can't trust her to make it look good". Such a DP response.

Lewis Martin Soucy

"I can't trust her to make it look good" that's such a "me" answer! That made my day Karen "Kay" Ross XD

Kyler Boudreau

I was forced into cinematography partially due to the "Rebel without a crew" reality of life. Will never forget screwing up two shooting days back in 2020 as I was learning how to freaking get proper exposure. Looked good on the camera screen. Got home only to see noise. Argh! But you keep pushing through, and by day 3 shooting that particular scene I was getting it right. =)

Karen "Kay" Ross

LOL! Aww, I'm so glad, @Lewis! Dude, I love that @Kyler - make it work no matter how things - or crew - fall through! But hey, you'll appreciate any future crew all the more because you know what MORE they bring to your set.
