BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET. But if you need access to funding sources, visit us we provide direct financing to solid projects, IMDB producers, projects with Distribution etc.
Secure distribution early so that even if you don't get upfront money, you have the best shot of getting reimbursement after it has been made. Have you met Johnny K. Wu yet? He's a member here and he has been making indie films for 20 years. He's really figured out the distribution game, not just for the money, but also to ensure there is an audience for his work. Drop him a line, he's a great guy!
Shay Villere I agree with Richard, Karen and Kiril. Build up as much money as you can first so you don’t have to go into debt.
For my first short film, my biggest expense was the camera! The actors worked for free and one of them donated their apartment as a location. But I made a mistake- I didn’t budget for film fest entries and was unable to afford to enter the film in more festivals. I really feel that would have made a big difference. So Save, Budget, get the Distribution. I think you’ll be a lot happier that way and less stressed.
Spend your money wisely!
