Great share, @Florin Şumălan! I like that Shannon said actors should be in touch with their emotions, not push for their emotions. She said actors pushing for their emotions leads to overacting. Overacting really sticks out in a movie or show.
Maurice Vaughan , yes, I think it is. I like too those things that she said that you say you like and also other things she talked about.
I don't know, I think it feels like a sense of freedom when you hear those ideas.
In our times too there are people who believe different things about acting, but imagine you lived in that period of time, surrounded by people who said (among other things) that acting, great actors are people who know very well how to make faces: how to make a "happy face", how to make a "sad face", how to make a "surprised face" and other facial expressions. Maybe you would have started to believe that too (when you were bombarded by almost every person with things like that), but maybe deep inside, you felt that something is wrong; that innermost voice of consciousness told you that there could be so much more to this...and that put you on a journey of searching...
...and one day you meet a person who talks about acting different from what you heard before; that person tells you things which bring clearness and open up new horizons that are beyond understanding...
Would it not feel like some sense of freedom from all those cheap, inferior things you heard before (things which kept you imprisoned in a false reality)?
Maybe I exaggerated and amplified this a little, but I think it applies here to some degree.
And I think this could be applied not only to acting but other fields too. Maybe there is so much more to discover even if maybe we think we have discovered what it is to discover...
I think in a way I relate to what Shannon said.
You are surrounded sometimes by ideas from different people and it's difficult many times to discern which are true; and little by little, starting to accept those ideas, makes you give up on things you loved and think they are ugly and not to to be loved - in this case acting - but hearing things like Shannon says, brings you some hope...acting could be a beautiful thing and not a cheap, inferior thing...
I hope you know what I mean.
While I was writing this, I was thinking that maybe it's stupid and I should delete what I wrote - this long, exaggerated comment, but I think it could be something good to what I said. Sometimes I deleted the text while I was writing a comment, because I thought that I was showing off and exaggerating and deviating from the subject, but I will post this one.
Anyway, if you wish, please reply and say what you think. Thank you.
You're welcome, Florin Şumălan. I definitely understand what you mean. I didn't have Stage 32 and screenwriting resources (videos, webinars, etc.) when I started screenwriting, and I got bad advice from people. Now when I learn things on Stage 32 and get great advice from people, it feels incredible, and I'm advancing my career a lot faster than when I was doing it (screenwriting) without Stage 32 and screenwriting resources. And your comment is definitely not stupid. Feel free to share what's on your mind.
