Why not start your journey on YouTube to build your audience and hook up with Indie Directors and tell them you will work for free to get yourself out there and put it all up on your YouTube Channel and when you break the 1k subs and 4k hours you will be monetized and from here you will make money with each video you put up.

Agree. Guy I know made this fan film and put it on YouTube and got monetized. Got 5.8 million views so far. You can expect to make up to $6 per 1,000 views. This means that his estimated earnings could be as much as $6,000 for every million views. He had zero budget, paid for it himself...but lots of friends helped out. As some of you know, I had a film go to #4 on Amazon Prime US. We had something like 71 million minutes streamed in a month. Around the same time, a guy on YouTube was sharing his earnings after he had a video go viral and get a very similar number of views. The YouTube earnings where 10x higher before anybody got a cut. Pretty shocking. It's a catch-22 though, because you have to try and get those views in the first place and can't rely on the luck of the algorithm. Plus, YouTube can just demonetise and/or deplatform you at will. I had Amazon Studios do that do me (back when their website existed) and it's heartbreaking to just have all your hard work deleted one day.

Being a content creator's its own creative strategy requiring its own time allotment. It can devour time that would be normally spent on being a writer.

Making YouTube videos is a very large time commitment, so if you go down that road be prepared for many tough hours at your computer. YouTube ain't easy or automatic. You gotta earn a lot of those views the hard way because the algorithm doesn't work for you for a while. However, if you have a great, unique idea for a channel, web series, video essay series, what have you in the world of content creation, YouTube is an amazing place to use as a platform to get it out there. Who knows what can pop off for you and it's a terrific place to put together an interesting portfolio of work!
