Anything Goes : An unexpected on-location bonus by Richard Fricker

An unexpected on-location bonus

In the last couple of hours of a shoot over 3 long days, the company was given a delightful boost when one of the actors spotted a whale breaching.

It was one of a pod of orcas (a.k.a. killer whales).

Limited by not much remaining daylight the camera crew had to resume shooting. Falling back on my news and doco instincts, I pulled out the only camera I had available - my phone - pointed it at the ocean, hit record and hoped some orcas would surface again.

A couple did.

I post this clip as inspiration and entertainment.

If I had another job I would not have been on an oceanic cliff surrounded only by nature and able to witness this orca pod pass by.

Please share any unanticipated bonuses you have witnessed that you may have missed if not working in film & TV production.
