Hey everyone, I’m filming my first short film soon. Just looking for any advice from people who’ve been through it before. If you’ve made a short and have tips, let’s connect and chat!
Hi Saint Flacko , I posted a BtS of one of our short films that might help provide some insight into the indie short films experience, pitfalls to avoid, as well as some entertainment value (hopefully, in some way), and feel free to message me if you have any specific questions; I’m happy to help when and where I can!
Plan your shoot, and shoot your plan. Be flexible enough to grab a shot or change a set up if it flows and makes your short better. Movies are mostly told in medium shots.
consider things ahead of time like how much power will you draw, where does crew park, where can equipment be staged so that minimal moving around has to happen. shot lists, even if they are stick figures help the crew decide the fastest way to get the shots. lookbooks are nice too to get everyone on the same page
Though you cannot plan for every contingency, have a plan going in, knowing that no plan survives first contact. Understand that you WILL change things on the fly in the moment. You have to be ok with that...or just get used to reshoots! Lol!
Saint Flacko, asking this question here in the Filmmaking Lounge was the perfect first step. This space is full of filmmakers who’ve been exactly where you are and are always generous with advice and encouragement. If you’re seeking more direct guidance, Stage 32 offers consultations with experienced producers, directors, and filmmakers who can help walk you through the process from pre-production to festival strategy. You can always reach out to Success@Stage32.com and let them know where you're at in your process and what your current goals are.
So excited for you to bring this project to life! Keep us updated on how it goes.
