Screenwriting : Research boots on the ground by Andrew Carroll

Research boots on the ground

As a physician, I realize that I have quite a bit of knowledge about healthcare, how things proceed in medicine, administration, etc. But every now and then, I need to get out and do some research.

The great thing is, as a primary care physician, I've developed a LOT of great relationships with just about every specialist around me. And asking questions, touching base, getting a little inside information, is probably a little (a lot) easier for me.

But every now and then, I gotta get out there, feet on the street.

So next week, I'm going to observe a robotic surgery. My current novel/screenplay involves a surgeon who uses a robotic surgery assistant. And since I've only watched one once it's time for me to get out there and spend some time in an operating room. It's unique access that's nice to have, but probably also pigeonholes me into writing healthcare and medical fiction.

But that's okay. I love it!

So I don't really have a question or anything. It's just that sometimes research and background is best experienced in person, and I'm grateful to my colleagues in medicine that give me the time and access I need to improve not only my medical acumen but also the ability to write much more realistically.

Having the opportunity to connect with professionals in different fields is extremely helpful, I agree Andrew Carroll!

You're right, Andrew Carroll. Sometimes research and background is best experienced in person. And if a writer can't get out and do some research, they can watch interviews, do virtual interviews with professionals, and watch videos.
