Screenwriting : Networking by Eve Mazur

Networking

Networking. A very important thing in any industry. Or basically... in life. I'm an introvert. I thought being a screenwriter and writer was perfect for introverts. However, life constantly forces me to step outside of my comfort zone. It turns out it's not just about hitting the keyboard. You have to reach out to people. Explore the world. Sometimes you have to go on stage. Sometimes you have to say something clever to the camera. Without preparation. Quite often, you have to talk about your projects to people you don't know. Introverts. Neurodivergent people. What are your tips for effective networking?

Hey, Eve Mazur. I'm an introvert too. Here's a post with networking tips I made that might help you: www.stage32.com/lounge/anything_goes/Networking-Tips-2

A script it but one way to present your story, there's also an outline, synopsis, treatment, pitch, and networking is weaning towards these as your build relationships. It takes time and youhave to get to know people, but be prepared to talk about your story in a variety of formats and in any situation from small talk to formal pitch.

No tips. Just do it.

As an introvert with an extrovert job, the biggest tip I learned was to stop focusing on ME and instead get really curious about others. People love to talk about themselves, and it takes the pressure off.

Right before I go into a social situation that is "high stakes": film festival for sure, final round of callbacks, anytime basically I feel the pressure to "perform", and "get it", step one: let that go, and take a deep breath, and remember to just focus on my breath, and literally, breath, and stop trying to impress, stop trying. Then, step two: smile, and keep it simple, and just talk like you are on the line at a coffee shop, we''re all human, and especially those at the top, they just want to be treated with kindness and honestly. Like you're on the line at the coffee shop :) You got this.

Motivation is good, but it's important to take care of your mental health. Introverts are more demotivated by rejections than regular people. The stress of networking can lead to depression. Therefore, it's crucial to approach forced communication with caution, avoid setting unrealistic expectations, and thoroughly prepare for presenting your projects.
