Hello everyone!
I recently received an email from a film director who came across one of my older compositions — a piece I wrote years ago and recorded with a full orchestra for my reel. They loved it and want to use that exact theme in their upcoming film.
The challenge is that there’s currently no budget for a new orchestral recording session. So, the idea is to use the original orchestral recording for the main theme (and possibly the end titles), while I’d recreate the rest of the score using high-quality virtual instruments.
What would you do in this situation? Would you adapt the original track to fit the film, or compose something new inspired by its vibe?
I’d love to hear your thoughts — especially from directors and fellow composers.
Here is the video.

If he wants the original, give him what he wants, IMHOP.

Hi, George Ioannidis. Congratulations! The track is incredible! I agree with Jon since it's what the director wants and there's no budget for a new orchestral recording session.

Like the actors chosen for each character. The score must be synchronized to the tone and theme of the film. If it’s thriller tone it to a jump charge, if its comedy loosen it to a cool, adventure; see for it to plunge a warm and dangerous collaboration. Romantic, make it innocent but seeking a cause to fill out at the end.

Always give the client what they want. Offer your advice from a professional standpoint, but in the end, it's their project. If they like what you did before, that should make your work easier and is a testament to your talent that your music is wanted .

George Ioannidis First question - are you being PAID to do a new version (aside from budget for new recording)? If not, do you have any specific objection to having the track used as is? If no - take the fee. You created it and the client wants it.
