Jon Shallit, I've been paying the bills by writing 1-2 screenplays a month working as a script doctor for exploitation rates for the last several years.
It all started when I was hit in the head with a sword on set, suffered a severe TBI, and wound up getting denied medical services in order to keep the production's well-intentioned insurance fraud from generating the wrong kind of paperwork. My 2020 started in 2013, and it hasn't let up.
I'm not convinced it's JUST because "times are tough right now," and I'm not convinced that everyone's seeing the same issues I am. What we're really seeing are systemic unsustainabilities manifesting themselves at the expense of more and more people with every generation... and right now, that looks like hyperinflation. It'll get worse. A lot worse, and that's okay. More people will be motivated to effect more meaningful and certain change.
Sustainable showbusiness is governed by practices that are pretty well-established, and Hollywood has been working outside those boundaries since the 90's at the latest... so none of this is shocking. I also think it's more systemic and more complex than "bear market."
Also, just for the record, suffering is always a choice. It's not one I have much patience for. Pain may be an inescapable fact of life, but I'm certainly not going to get caught wallowing in my feels because of someone else's economic or social policies. There's a limitless range of means by which to meet that challenge, and to prevail, and I don't think I'll ever run out of ways to advance and escalate my own vision for the future.
If someone puts the word "suffering" in my mouth, I'm gonna clean my mouth out with soap... but I'm gonna clean that other person's mouth out, as well!

Jon Shallit There's no question that this economy is broken, and there's no question it's hurting people... and even that is symptomatic of still grander failures.
