Bold Mzansi (South African) Stories – Books & Screenplays

I’m Mathews N. Lehlongwane, III

I grew up between film reels, cinemas and a video library in Katlehong, South Africa, when my father opened Thokozani Cinema in 1980 and that’s where my obsession with storytelling grew. I write unapologetic, avant-garde Mzansi stories that interrogate society, corruption, love, and life itself.

My work includes:

• Self-published books

"Frame by Frame: The Quest for Justice": a whistleblower framed, fighting corruption and systemic rot, based on personal events.

"Frame by Frame 2: Justice Served": the investigation goes deeper, into personal trauma and societal decay.

"Corporate Dad v2.0": one accident, a matriculant’s dreams derailed, resilience restores him — the ultimate reward: family and self.

"Marriage… How to Fight… Appropriately!": a relationship boxing match with parallel counselling for husbands and wives.

"So… You Just Got Divorced!": a stark gritty view of GBV, holding cells and consequences in relationships.

• Screenplays:

“Serenity”: a look at a metaphysical journey based on reckoning, fear of the unknown and letting go.

“Redemption”: a generational drama plucking into South African elite ex-pats and examines if their days in the bush were really about “inkululeko” (freedom) or themselves.

“Subjugate”: a political intrigue which explores how South Africa would have turned out if things were done differently.

“Three’s a Charm”: a South African-flavoured female buddy action comedy inspired by the Three Dragons that graduated from China Drama Academy in Hong Kong.

All these stories are ready to print or screen, and I retain full rights to both book and screen adaptations.

I’m looking for representation to bring them to life.

Someone once shouted, “Show me the money!” Well, I believe these projects can do just that.

Hi, Mathews Lehlongwane. Great to meet you. Your books and scripts sound interesting. You could post about your books and scripts on your profile. Producers search profiles for projects. That and networking are how I sold four short scripts to a producer. Click the gear symbol in the top right-hand corner and select “Edit profile” in the drop-down menu. Scroll down to “Loglines” and click “Add/edit loglines” to the right of “Loglines.” You can also post about your books and scripts on your profile this way: www.stage32.com/loglines (near the top where it says “Add a Logline”)

Mathews Lehlongwane great to meet you here on Stage32! I'm reading your post and going through your bio profile and all I kept thinking was the word 'prolific!' - congrats. Have you pitched any of your projects here on Stage32?

I see a lot of well educated and hard-hitting, goal achieving people and often ask myself, who would want the work of an autodidact. I guess that's a trait I also picked up from being between the reels at the cinema, which just slammed me with countless shots of self-doubt but I will say it has also given me the opportunity to use my own voice; loud and unapologetic.

Mathews Lehlongwane I would just focus on that last part: "use my own voice; loud and unapologetic" cheers
