Introduce Yourself : I'm posting this in the Introduce Yourself Lounge, but any hall will do... by Doug Kayne

I'm posting this in the Introduce Yourself Lounge, but any hall will do...

It's that time already? We find ourselves at another Introduce Yourself Weekend. And, once again, I present the following challenge: Figure out the theme of my post, and you get awarded points. I think this one's kind of easy, so it's worth five points. Shall we begin? Actually, it doesn't matter...I'm doing it anyway BECAUSE I SAID SO.

My name is Doug Kayne, a writer, comedian, actor, and smart-ass based out of Los Angeles, California. Born and raised here in L.A., in fact (even though some people think i give off a MANHATTAN vibe).

Comedy-wise, I'm a veteran with improv comedy, having performed it in one way or another for over thirty years. Do I love it? MAYBE I DO. Currently, I'm performing with the improv sketch group, Those Four Misfits (www.ThoseFourMisfits.com). Our next show is coming up on November 21 at the Whitmore-Lindley Theater in North Hollywood. If you can't make it to the show, you can check us out on YouTube as well (https://www.youtube.com/@thosefourmisfits6017) -- we'll call that PLAN B.

Thankfully, that's not THE ONLY THRILL. Writing-wise, I had early success with a made-for-TV movie, Romantic Comedy 101. It was a nice little SLEEPER hit on cable. I've also written web series, short films, and comedy sketches that have been produced. I've got the first season of a sci-fi comedy series, Going Commander that's ready to pitch (even though we still want to film a couple of teaser scenes), a horror short, Chips the Clown, that's in pre-production, a spec script based on Thundarr the Barbarian I'm collaborating on, a spec detective series I'm also collaborating on, Knee Deep in Paradise, and I just started working on a more grounded sci-fi feature, It Wasn't Me.

Okay...I'll stop stating the things I'm working on. I promise. I WILL...I WILL...FOR NOW.

That being said, I'm always on the lookout for cool, creative people to collaborate with. I just want to get stuff made, and help others do the same. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to work together or just talk shop! I mean SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE us a fighting chance to get our stuff made, right? Let's all make some MAD MONEY!

Now back to eating my big pile of Skittles in front of me. Well, not all of them. Only the REDS.

Hey, Doug Kayne. Is the theme Diane Keaton movies?

Doug Kayne

Winner, winner, chicken dinner, Maurice Vaughan 5! You earned yourself five shiny points! I believe that’s two in a row for you.

Maurice Vaughan

Woo-hoo! I wasn't sure until I got to SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE, Doug Kayne.

Doug Kayne

Which is an apt metaphor for a career in writing, acting, etc., Maurice Vaughan 5. Really any pursuit of your goals: No matter how long it takes, stick with it and eventually you’ll reach your goal.

Maurice Vaughan

You're right, Doug Kayne. Does Chips in Chips the Clown talk?

Doug Kayne

He most definitely does talk, Maurice Vaughan

Maurice Vaughan

Cool, Doug Kayne. I like Art the Clown, but I wish he'd talk sometimes.

Amanda Toney

Diane Keaton movies! Well done! Congrats on doing improv for so long - do you have any tips to train your brain to react quicker when performing skits?

Doug Kayne

Honestly, Amanda Toney, it takes a lot of practice and rehearsal (yes, good improv is a result of practice and rehearsal). Obviously you can’t rehearse what you’re going to say in an improv scene in a rehearsal beforehand, but you can learn to be not so in-your-head and be quicker with your responses. I remember when I was just starting put at improv, I was very in my head. And, as a result, I wasn’t that funny. I still remember my first breakthrough moment onstage when it finally clicked. In my years of teaching improv, it’s great to see when my students reach those moments. On the plus side, it is a skill that you can learn and develop.

Ashley Renee Smith

Great to see you, Doug Kayne! You know how much I enjoy your IYW posts. =)

Doug Kayne

Thanks! Great to see you, too, Ashley Renee Smith! Maybe they'll get compiled into a book someday, like David Letterman's Top Ten Lists or Dennis Miller's Rants.

Ashley Renee Smith

I love that idea, Doug Kayne!
