Screenwriting : Writing is Re-writing by Bram Christian

Bram Christian

Writing is Re-writing

This a stark reality that writing is re-writing, and the development of a script MUST go through many stages to produce what is considered a viable script and quite often, the process reaches far beyond our own ideas and latching onto phases of learning extensively, research and going back to the drawing board at often as it takes to get it right. Thomas Edison says I have not failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won’t.

Great writing to all.

Cheers!

You're right, Bram Christian. What's your rewrite process?

Bram Christian

Maurice Vaughan since I’ve taken classes and read often the advice of successful writers ahead of me, I put my script down and forget about it. then when I go back to it an read it, I’m able to distinct what isn’t working then I kill the darlings and add more suitable dialogue and no matter how it reads to me, I often find that I can add something better, and that’s how it begins. and I do this until I am satisfied with the end result. This often culminates in the process of may drafts until I know it is right and even then, it can always be better.

Taking a break from a script is a great idea, Bram Christian! I do it too. I also break the rewrite up into categories. It's easier for me to focus on one thing at a time when I rewrite.

yes so true

Bram Christian

Maurice Vaughan That's a good way to approach it. I see it as making space for what needs to included and maintaining the more important parts of the story so it creates the best work possible.

And rewriting again!

Screenwriting is like rock polishing. You need to tumble the stones to knock off all the sharp edges. It's loud and takes awhile, but if you're patient and persistent, the results are undeniable. A polished rock (and screenplay) shines like a mirror compared to one in the rough.
