A Screenwriter's Evolution... : Is it Writer's Block, Burnout, or a Chance...to Evolve

Fellow writers for the screen,

I've been finding my stride now, slowly, but steadily. A fresh, quiet, and true certainty these past two weeks has become my new "neutral" in this new year 2026.

But, before I hit this steadiness, this knowing, before "I knocked off the cobwebs", something had to...shift within me.

An evolution occurred, silently, but tangibly, to my voice, style, rhythm...as a screenwriter. To my conscious self, this felt like it happened overnight, but in fact, this had been brewing in my subconscious since the beginning of December, when things within slowed down, and my screenwriting...apparently, stopped .I questioned it, fought it, and wondered what in the world was happening! Was I finished? Was my writing sucky? Did I...lose my mojo?

(Perhaps some of you are feeling this slowness, or maybe even, a block in your screenwriting flows)

Then...a few days ago...the path opened up within. And, I realized, my voice, as a screenwriter...has evolved. It's silly not to think, that our voices as artists: screenwriters, actors, painters, composers, filmmakers...artists...change...evolve as we change, as we live, as we grow, but it's at times, often, imperceptible, since much of what we do...is from the inside, out.

My attention and dedication to a scripts seems slower to the outside eye, less rushed, less time-confined, or restricted, less "goal oriented". Now, there is a, a sort of "slowness", which may seem like it at first, but what it is really, is confidence, and peace in what I do, and more than anything else, a trust in the story's work, not my minds. A deep well of understanding, respect, and connection to why I'm doing what I do, in this case, as a screenwriter, has become my sanctuary, my go to, and my new "green room", if you will.

The themes, the characters, the worlds I have jotted down as inspiration, are all peacefully now waiting, as I attentively, and confidently, compose the music of the story, with words, feelings, and all my own, individual nuances...that each of us has, and only each of us can vibrate.

All the outside metrics that sometimes fight for a screenwriter's attention, have been made optional, all of the anxiety-creating rules that at times, so many people feel writers, screenwriters, must live under, now appear as what they are: choices, not orders. And, my own heart, my imagination, and my soul have come to life, and time...well, time doesn't exist anyway, so...it's about the story's time...not my ego's, or the constant need to compete that at times, the industry wrangles us with.

Queridos colegas, mon chere amie: how is your voice evolving in this new beginning, this new year...has it evolved already, and has it completely changed the course , the style of your screenwriting process...or, perhaps, that evolutions is now knocking at your door, offering you a leap into the unknown parts of your voice, that will guide you ahead, in your new work to come?

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Juliana Philippi. Glad you're finding your stride! My voice has evolved over the years. I add more unfilmables in my scripts now because they help me tell stories and hook readers.

Juliana Philippi

Maurice Vaughan Ooooohh...pray tell more, what is an unfilmable? I have my own version I guess, like exposition, character description, emotions?

Michael Dzurak

A nice insight into a creative process. Thanks for sharing.

Marie Hatten

Thank you Juliana Philippi for sharing . I can understand what you are talking about and yet it seems so far off for me . I think I need to have written more / become more familiar with my process and my voice .

Juliana Philippi

Marie Hatten It’s such a funny, imperceptible thing when it’s happening in you, when you’re going through it. And absolutely, the more you write, the more you trust the stories you want to tell, and work on them and continue to forge that connection between your inspiration and your hands, the doing part, the evolution just… is:) constant expansion and contraction, like the universe.

Marie Hatten

You are so intuitive and spiritual , love that Juliana Philippi

Maurice Vaughan

Those are unfilmables, Juliana Philippi. Also thoughts. The physical appearance, clothes, accessories, etc. in a character description can be filmables though.

Meriem Bouziani

That’s so inspiring. I hope you continue to grow even more in your creative journey.

Juliana Philippi

Maurice Vaughan Nice:) Those should always be there! Love that.

Juliana Philippi

Meriem Bouziani I'm glad it inspired you, and thank you for your well wishes !! Same for you, growth and expansion : )
