Two years ago, I did a trivial statistical analysis, and posted the result here. I checked the finalists for a screenwriting contest a decade earlier.
For a third of the finalists, their career afterward was better than before. For another third, the situation was the opposite. And for the remaining third of the finalists, there was no change.
Presumably this means that screenwriting contests hardly help the participants.

Despite my body of work, I've only ever submitted to one competition, and have seen evidence of people who have won/placed in 100+ competitions.
