I directed my first documentary, made possible by grant funding, more than 25 years ago. I was extremely fortunate to receive a distribution deal almost immediately, and even made a little money from it. Not a common scenario now or even back then.
Today, just like way back when, there is so much competition for grant money, especially from those big funders we're all familiar with, that it's nearly impossible to get anything from them. And if you're like me... you'll have more luck threading a needle with telepathy than you will meeting their stringent criteria.
But, don't despair fellow filmmakers... there's hope.
Depending on where you live, your local government may offer creative grants. These local grants for creative projects sometimes offer funding for artists and organizations to produce community-focused projects. Municipal arts council grants, mini-grants for neighborhood events, and specific funding for public art installations are often up for grabs. Major funding often supports 501(c)(3) nonprofits and individual artists, with awards ranging from as little as $100 to over $50,000. When I researched grants from my city government, I found two full pages online with rolling deadlines and offerings up to $100K!
The point is... Sometimes, when you're looking for funding, that pot of gold could be right in your own backyard.
Do some research in your own hometown and let me know what you find in the comments below.
