Screenwriting : What Makes A Good Short Film by David Veal

What Makes A Good Short Film

I'm in a local screenwriting group. Sometimes we begin our bi-monthly meetings with topics of interest. A topic coming up is titled, "Making a Good Short." (It's a meetup.com and we meet at a cafe. There's no charge, it is a free group, open to all local writers.)

Since the group are screenwriters of various levels, I was focusing on the writing stage, rather than the production. However, attending a local film festival, I'm wondering about the wisdom of letting go of producing or directing.

Some films are successful, in that the audience is fully into them. Others should have been successful, started out strong, but lost their way. Those are general observations, but what are your experiences?

I know many think short films area waste of time. Here is my description for the local group:

"There are a lot of reasons for writing short scripts. Developing your voice, developing a story, character deep dives. You have an opportunity to invite your filmmaking friends to shoot it and strengthen those relationships. Shorts are great for introducing your full length script to producers. Share your reasons for, and your reason against, writing short films."

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

I think the first goal of short film scripts is to stay focused as much as possible. Don't get carried away on the story or characters.

Bill Albert I agree. It seems like some of the 5 minute shorts focus, but longer ones may pack in one too many added ideas, and that takes the audience a moment to digest.
