Question for fellow writers and screenwriters:
When adapting a novel into a screenplay, what do you find most challenging?
I am currently exploring the possibility of adapting my novel, The Love Letter After Forty Years, into a feature screenplay and would love to hear insights from those who have gone through the process.
What lessons did you learn during adaptation, and what advice would you give to an author taking this step for the first time?
Looking forward to learning from this amazing community.

Hi Hiro Yamamoto - I'm sure it's an exciting journey even thinking about adapting your novel. I've been working on an adaptation of someone else's novel for a bit now and I would safely share that:
1) the most challenging (and important) was to find the story within the story. same world, same characters, same general plot, but which element(s) of the character's conflict and relationships will optimize the original novel's intent in this very different visual medium.
2) stay open to the possibility that you are recreating the story of your novel - not simply 'adapting' it
wishing you the best on this journey and look forward to following it here on the platform. cheers

One of the biggest challenges is deciding what to leave out. A novel can spend pages exploring thoughts and backstory, while a screenplay needs to tell the story through action, dialogue, and visuals. My advice is to focus on the core emotional journey of the story and be willing to let go of anything that doesn't serve the film version. If you decide to move forward with the adaptation, I'd also be happy to help with editing, beta reading, and refining the screenplay to make sure it's as strong as possible.

So far I’ve only done this with one of my novels (Metal Garden) and for sure the hardest part is keeping the soul of the story intact whilst cutting a lot of the material. I had to exclude several minor characters and storylines, and even change some subplots entirely. The screenplay is currently on pause but I’m potentially going to change the ending, too.
Basically I learned firsthand why it is that film adaptations differ so much from the source material lol
Actually, Scriptank.com is launching soon and will allow novels to be uploaded for adaptation into scripts.
If you do it three times (Three books) you’ll find you understand it much better.
Hiro,
get the book, No Country For Old Men written by Cormac McCarthy and put it side by side with the screenplay by the same name written by the Coen Bros - an exercise that will surely be enlightening. send me your novel, maybe we can work together. Tommy
