Rashida Jones and Will McCormack have been writing together for over a decade, and their new film The Invite—directed by Olivia Wilde, starring Penélope Cruz, Ed Norton, and Seth Rogen—just sold to A24 for over $12 million out of Sundance. It's a couples dramedy about marriage, bitterness, and the messiness of middle age.
What I appreciate about their work is how real it feels. Jones says they have an "internal cheese meter" they're constantly checking—conversations have to sound like ones real people have. They even consulted relationship expert Esther Perel on the script. Jones says the movie actually made her appreciate marriage more: "When you can show acceptance, even if it's at a different pace, that's an argument to get married."
They're also writing a Tom and Jerry feature, which they're treating as a rom-com where the cat and mouse try to break up their owners' relationship. The logline: "Love is worth fighting for."
Jones and McCormack write about complex relationships without getting preachy. That's harder than it looks. Has anyone seen The Invite? And what do you think of their Tom and Jerry idea?
