I don’t like the idea of “understanding” a film. I don’t believe that rational understanding is an essential element in the reception of any work of art. Either a film has something to say to you or it hasn’t. If you are moved by it, you don’t need it explained to you. If not, no explanation can make you moved by it. Federico Fellini

I think the word "understanding" is meant loosely. Sometimes its hard to find the right word to explain an aesthetic experience. I use the term "get it". Some people get some films and other people don't. However, sometimes it is necessary to understand a film logically and sometimes films don't make sense. Actually I have sometimes seen a movie in a different way when someone has explained it to me, so I don't agree with Federico 100%.
