Screenwriting : The curse of one dimensional characters by Sean Blackburne

Sean Blackburne

The curse of one dimensional characters

They say that best way to write a screnplay is to go out and observe human behaviour. Nothing worse than having characters in your script that are one dimensional. how do you create real depth in your characters?

David Gwinn

Give each character 3 or 4 specific traits that guides their dialogue. For example, a Detective may be - intelligent, a liar, driven, & controlling.

Agatha Hergest

Doesn't even have to guide their dialogue, really speaking. All you need are enough foibles, habits and whatnot, and this will make them more rounded.

Tom Rooney

I find the nut of my character by doing a back-bible on him/her, and then finding how he/she reacts in situations which can be added to the screenplay.

Sandra Campbell

I agree with Tom. I write character bios, even for my supporting characters--birth date, past relationships etc.
