Screenwriting : Not being discouraged by doubters of your work. by Edward Mangan

Not being discouraged by doubters of your work.

Is it hard to get started on your film or screenplay project, because people doubt your ability to do anything good?Don't be.Don't let self doubt make you delay your creative flow.Go forward, show the world how creative and talented you are.Where would we be if Steven Spielberg quit on JAWS after weeks of difficult tech problems.Or George Lucas, when the first preview of the movie Star Wars was panned by everyone in the theater. They went forward, listened to their hearts, and completed their vision.I have written 3 screenplays and turned them into feature films. One has been seen in Europe,Los Angeles ,Chicago,Colorado,NYC and Philadelphia. Didn't make a million dollars but,I made it,with my money and followed my dream to completion. So,who is ever discouraging you, shut them up with your talent and passion for what you do.Any questions/ Thoughts?

it's in your soul, you cherish the world you write about, like a secret crush. The escape to the world ou build is really great.

I once had someone ask me to tell their friend about my "interesting hobby". I replied ,"well I make hooked rugs but I don't have time now because of my CAREER in screenwriting." I feel like i need to carry around my first check to prove it sometimes!!

I think the fact that I've had a little success has finally stopped the nay-sayers. When I first started at my current day job, I had a deadline to reach so I had to work on it on breaks (too cold in Western NY for sitting in the car and no place else to go!) My boss saw what I was doing and said snidely, "What, you think you're gonna go to Cannes?" (he pronounced it wrong too haha) I just smiled and said, "Who knows." But after I told him about successfully negotiating my price on my first sale, he had a lot more respect and became pretty supportive. Now he's ready to retire and we joke about who is going to be able to leave the job first, me after I can afford to quit (and buy my own health insurance since hubby is self employed - the real reason I still work!) or him when he retires haha.

there is nothing worse for a talented person, than to ignore their instincts and try to accommodate untalented, corrupt people. Great things happen when you trust your instincts, and go for it. Don't allow the dumbed down world that's forgotten the value of inherent gifts, to prevent you from achieving what you're capable of. It's a hard, difficult life, that often involves a lot of personal sacrifice, but boy is it worth it when you get there.
