In getting started in your career...is animation the way to go?

I was told by another writer that the cheap, less headache of a way to break into the biz is doing a Animation project. It worked for Lucas back in the day. Do anyone feel it does now?

Rachael Saltzman

Animation cheaper and less of a headache? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. If you want to do an animated project, by all means do it. How are you as an animator? Then you'll have to hire some. They take much longer. Hire voice artists. Get ready for six months of concepting and boarding, at least.

Michael Berry

So, time is what you're saying I be loosing if I do an Animation project? What I can film in 6mos. to a year can take me longer with animation?

Rachael Saltzman

Having done both, animation is a far more time intensive process, if you're doing it yourself. If you don't have the skills, it's a LOT harder to find people to work on a long term project like that for little or no money, and a good animation team is not going to be less expensive. It's a whole lot cheaper and faster to source a crew and some actors for a day or two, than people for months. If you want to write/direct for animated flicks, do an animated project. If you want to work in live action, do a live action project. The processes are completely different. I also have no idea where he got the idea that Lucas' first works were animation. They weren't.

It was a Doc on Lucas I saw. One of his first projects was Animation. He said...It was the easiest and cheapest way to break into the biz. Of course that was back in the day...LOL!

Debbie Elicksen

Cheap and less of a headache spells amateur. Just saying. You get what you prepare for. For any position, if you want it bad enough, you need to keep learning and perfect it. Once you stop preparing and learning, you might as well get out of the business.

Debbie Elicksen

Spielberg is no amateur and nothing he does is ever cheap and easy.

George Samuels

Animation is not cheap O_O

Rik Carter

I thought I knew a little about Lucas. What cheap animation project did he do to get break into the biz?

Rachael Saltzman

I can't figure that one out either. What he did do, was start as a PA for Coppola and worked his way up. Don't forget he directed at least five films before Star Wars.

Michael Berry

Yeah, I saw it in a Doc about him. I think he wanted to be an Animator but, somehow switched to Live film for some reason. I think the Doc was on Netflix....Check it out if it's still there.
