Acting : Donate to act. by Hardy Awadjie

Donate to act.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this new trend of 'if you donate, you can be in the movie' or some other perk or benefit? I first noticed it down in Australia when I was onset for a feature film trailer and when I returned to the US I noticed it a lot more. I find it deeply disturbing that you have genuine people out there looking to become actors or furnish their skills as an actor especially those that go to school for it but are being pushed aside by someone that donated $5,000 to be in the film.

Rachael Saltzman

The kind of project that does that is generally not paying anyone they don't have to. Welcome to the business.

Then why not just state it is for credit/meal/experience? The idea that if someone pays enough they can be an actor with speaking roles eliminates those that have worked hard to be selected for those films. Sort of like the 1% for the film industry.

Bruce Whited

No matter how you cut it, its still "Pay to perform" and that should send any actor running. Stay away from them!

Rachael Saltzman

I think you guys are missing one huge aspect. No one is asking actors to pay to perform. What they're looking for is that rich doctor or dentist who would get a kick out of seeing themselves on screen. If someone is looking for that, they're not interested in casting an actor for that role.

Vasco Phillip de Sousa

Spike Lee has it in his recent film, pay 1000 bucks to be an extra. He has 21 takers already. Veronica Mars even "sold" a speaking part. There are also films which allow people to pay to be in the crew, or to get a producer credit, or whatever. Is crowdfunding what you were speaking about?

Jennifer Bailey

I applied for a role the other day and they replied sayin they didn't wanna audition me but if I wanted to pay for a producer credit I could. I

Not a good thing. But then again, Australians are into their money, just like Americans. Everything is powered by money now-a-days. It's a sad state...

Hardy Awadjie

I am seeing a lot of the 'pay to be in the credit' type ordeals and it does seem that in this economy, people are looking for new ways to fund their films. I feel by stating "if you have money to throw around and want to be in a movie, contact us!" is a very dangerous slippery slope to the point where you are no longer going to have excellent acting but instead a movie full of people that just wanted to be in front of the camera.

E.B. Laird

I don't think there giving anyone a part that could actually affect the film. It has become common on crowd funding. The pay to be a co-producer is super common, that's simply for someone to have their name listed as a producer.

Hardy Awadjie

E.B. I guess that makes more sense. I have seen a bit of it on crowd-funding for producers, I guess they are just now attempting to do pass it on to actors as well.
