Screenwriters collaborating with a co-writer

What's your thought on having a co-writer help you write your screenplay? What's the good, the bad and the ugly?

Ray Anthony Martinez

I first started writing screenplays in 1999, while in the Military. I met a guy who was interested in movies as much as I was. So, naturally we began talking about movie ideas and whatnot. We both got out of the Army and he lives in California, while I'm in Florida... Everything I write, I send him for his opinion and vice versa. We still collaborate on many scripts. So, to answer your question.... It's not a bad idea at all, so long as ego's don't get involved. You may get stuck at a certain point in a script, and they may have the answer. As far as writing styles are concerned, he is a better writer than I am, so I take his opinion to heart, and not take it offensively. Good Luck!

Thank you for your input. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. At 40, I'm new to this amazing business I've loved since childhood. I've been thinking about finding a writer with their feet wet to collaborate or help me with the stuck points I get in due to my lack of experience. Right now I'm a big sponge so I always appreciate everyone's input. This is a great field and I am loving it. Thank you

No problem. I'm by no means an expert, but I have written over a dozen feature length scripts, as well as several shorts. Just starting out? Have you found the scripts of some of your favorite films? That's a great learning tool!

By the way, 40 is the new 20! (I'm 37)LOL!!!!

HAHA Great! Then I have some time. Yes, I've actually been reading a ton of scripts. That has really helped me a lot. Also great folks like yourself have been really amazing. It's nice to know that everyone I've met has been so willing to share their knowledge with no selfeshness. Very greatful to you all. I'm a loyal friend for that.

I posted a couple links the other day, that I find useful... Here is one of them: http://www.storymastery.com/articles/30-screenplay-structure

Writing partners are hard. Personally, I haven't found a writing partner that I work well with. I've worked with some in the past. Some are still friends and some, we just parted ways. Sometimes, it's good to get that other perspective. Honestly, writing with a partner is not for everyone. But, if you're really looking for one, it will take you awhile before you find that perfect partner. But, if you're lucky, you'll find one in the first try! Good luck with your writing!

It's always good to get another set of eyes on a project but you have to get some one you trust to co-write with.Even if they are your friend draw up a written agreement just in case.

Thank you all for taking time to provide your thoughts. It's greatly appreciated. This is a great community and I look forward to learning and collaborating with all of you

Thanks for the great input everyone. I'm gonna play it by ear. If I find someone with more experience who's interested I'll do a co-thing if not I'll definitely look for some input. I appreciate everyone's input.

Twice I've worked as a co-writer on projects and both have been very gratifying, one in Australia and one in Ireland. Very professional. The directors were the original writers but felt they needed help with structure, character development and dialogue and asked me for my input. There were 20 drafts, perhaps, back and forth, give and take. These guys were looking to make something better, was not about ego. One is being prepped for a shoot. The other is in development. BTW, on both scripts -- it was worth the risk. I really liked their stories.

I can see how too many cooks could spoil the broth, but my experience with a co-writer worked well. I think it worked because my co-writer and I had a natural understanding concerning delegation of authority. My respect for him as as a researcher was reciprocated by his respect for me as a writer. However, every person is radically unique.
