Anything Goes : The role of the agent! by Martin Johnston

The role of the agent!

Hi Everyone, I am interested in exploring the world of the theatrical or talent agent. Predominantly, I am focusing on that of the actor but if lessons can be learned from other areas then I would also be interested in hearing these testimonials. I often feel given this title, agent or indeed that of personal manager, adds an element of mystery and a respect that raises them to 'god-like' status and this prevents many an actor from having a natural and mutually beneficial working relationship. I'm interested in hearing from people regarding how they found the 'right' agent. What should they expect from their agent? How do people nurture their relationship with their agent? Have people gained representation from inviting agents to their shows. Is there anything you would definitely avoid? What would you like to see from an agent (that perhaps you are not getting from yours?). And then the agent free process; how successful have individuals been in representing themselves, and in achieving moving to the next level, breaking out of a casting bracket and of course, most importantly, getting and sustaining work? Is self-representation made all the easier through technology and social media? Answering some or all of the above questions I know is exhausing but your insight, guidance and experiences would be greatly appreciated and highly valued. Thanking you in anticipation.
