My name is Basil Simon, I am a musical workaholic and have an inextinguishable fire in my belly for sound design! I would be very interested in knowing what music/sounds you guys are excited about right now for films. Is there anything you heard on a recent release that really got your attention? I am currently planning my new sound for the rest of 2014 and am feeling the buzz for really putting something new out there. Anything you wish to share would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day! Baz!

Hi Basil - I'm absolutely loving Reznor's electronic scores. Social Network, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo especially. The scores aren't as dark as they have been in the past, but I like where he's been going with his sound storytelling.

Hi Basil... Hans Zimmer gets me every time. Man Of Steel's World Engine sfx blew me away... If you get a chance to find Flash Back on You Tube, Martin Pavey did the soundscape (and directed) and it's pretty good... Music wise I personally really enjoy Linkin Park, I reckon some of their stuff would be great as a soundtrack. Don't know if that's the sort of feedback you were looking for but hope it helps some :-)

Hi Andy thanks for the input. Il try to get a listen to the Hans Zimmer stuff you mentioned. I did check out the flashback footage you mentioned and although the sound was clearly good I couldn't help feeling it was far too epic for the nature of that footage. For instance in the beginning when the woman comes down the steps and says "what are you doing here?" the music felt like something out of a classic epic film like star wars or something and that something really big was going to happen! I got that feeling all the way mostly. normally the sound simply provides suitable background mood and goes almost unnoticed but in this it dominated with all the essence of an intruder! Just my humble opinion!

Hi Basil, you're very welcome to the contribution. Hans ZImmer has and still does a lot of work on big movies... I often listen to Batman Begins for inspiration when writing. - I hear what you're saying re Flash Back, but have to say that the big feel for a short film is what I liked about it, plus the depth of every little sound, even the breathing and clicks on a dial being used :-) Other interesting music might include Tangerine Dream and even Barry Gray (who was a family friend when I was growing up) bottom line of what I'm trying to say is, the soundtrack/soundscape can make or break a movie or tv show in my opinion, I really admire anyone who creates sounds for tv/movies, you guys breathe another of life into a story, my hat is off to you sir :-) Hey, where can we hear your work?

I morphed from singing profewssionally and signed to RCA as singer songwriter into voice overs. Also was a studio singer 20 years. People kept asking me to do voice overs free when I was in a studio singing, so I joined SAG AFTRE (32 years ago) so could get paid, no questions. It worked. Plus, love the insurances we get and now, two pensions. Yippee. Say hello folks. I'm pretty new to this site.

Woah! Dude! I'm listening to Something So Bad as I type. Damn I love it! Tell me you have a version of it with lyrics? I can imagine a real gravel throated lead like, George Melly - this is great stuff... Thanks for the link (ava spinning around right now) Some names you might want to connect with in the UK may be of interest include, Annalie Wilson (lovely vocalist-musician) Liam W Ashcroft into 80s techno, Gary Martin all round nice guy/singer/vo artist, Jeremy Stephens (film sound and music guy) and if you're looking for something extremely different Malcolm Kakois (performer often in the 12 Bar Club in London... also my cousin :-) Just in case you're ever looking out for other performers/artists. Hope that is of some help, now really enjoying, CIncinnati :-) Great stuff Basil...
