A young attractive Thai lady attempts to commit murder-suicide by ramming her motorbike into a tree. Her unfaithful boyfriend is on the back of the bike.

The boyfriend survives. 

But she dies, impaled by a branch. 

They were both puppeteers in a Thai puppetry troupe. The older head of the troupe was secretly in love with the girl. He takes the wood of the branch she died on and makes a stunningly beautiful puppet out of it.

Is the spirit of the dead girl inside the puppet? 

Is the puppet trying to kill the unfaithful boyfriend?

SYNOPSIS:

A jealous, screaming, ranting Thai girl, Nok, crashes her motorbike into a tree so that she and her boyfriend, Chaai, (who is on the back of the bike) will die together.

Nok is impaled on a branch of the tree. As she dies, we see flashbacks of their relationships. Joining a Thai puppetry troupe and meeting Chaai, a puppeteer. Her attraction to him. The secret love that the puppet-maker, Piao, has for Nok. Chaai pledging his love to Nok. She says she is waiting until marriage. He asks her to marry him. She yields up her virginity. She is so happy. Later, unknown to Chaai, she spies him with another woman. She finds out she is pregnant.

She dies on the tree.

Chaai, however, was thrown clear and is taken to hospital

The heart-broken puppet-maker, Piao, comes back to the tree and saws off the limb of the tree that Nok was impaled on. He cradles it and cries. He takes the wood and turns it into a stunningly beautiful princess puppet. The spirit of Nok is in the wood.

The puppet will come to plague Chaai’s life. At first it is little things - just the suspicion that it is watching. Did it just move by itself? Just slightly?

The beautiful Nok puppet seems to inspire the troupe. They perform with a level of art as they have never done before. When that puppet is on stage, the audience is enraptured. A new show is built around the Nok puppet. It is an unprecedented success.

Chaai is an aspiring actor and has been offered a role but then his face is nicked by the puppet in a seeming accident and he loses the role.

Small things become bigger things. More and more little incidents pile up.

A girl in the troupe obviously wants to sleep with Chaai but she has a freak accident where she falls down stairs. The Nok puppet is nearby. The girl’s leg is broken and she has to go to hospital.

Chaai starts to develop a suspicion that the puppet is alive.

Chaai has sex with a woman. That night, in the darkness, as he is asleep, something or someone tries to cut off his penis. And almost succeeds. In hospital, he tells other puppeteers that he it was the Nok puppet and that he will destroy it. They think he is insane. He is medicated and falls asleep.

While he is sleeping, the puppet-maker leaves the Nok puppet in the hospital. Chaai awakes to find it lying beside him. He screams and runs from the hospital. He seeks refuge with the woman he slept with. They have erotic play but he cannot have sex because his penis still needs to heal. They fall asleep. The girl wakes up to some small sounds and goes into the kitchen. She screams. Chaai awakes and runs into the kitchen. The girl says she was attacked in the dark. She has slash marks on her legs. Chaai is sure now it was the puppet.

Chaai goes to the puppet-maker. He wants to get the puppet to destroy it. Piao confesses as to how the puppet was made. Chaai is furious and vows to destroy the puppet. There is a loud argument which threatens to become violent. Somehow Chaai contains himself but as he is going, a bottle is thrown into the back of his head. He turns around to confront Piaow. Chaai sees the Nok puppet sitting in the corner. Was it the puppet that threw the bottle? Chaai doesn’t know whether to attack the puppet or the puppet-maker first. He tries to attack the puppet. The puppet-maker defends the Nok puppet. There is a violent struggle. The puppet-maker is killed. Chaai turns to destroy the puppet but it isn’t where it was. He desperately searches for it to destroy it.

Then he hears the sounds of police sirens.

Chaai is in court charged with murder. The puppetry troupe is in the courtroom. They hate him for killing Piao. One of them takes out the Nok puppet and sits it on his leg. Chaai tries to attack the puppet. He is restrained. As he is dragged away, the Nok puppet waves.

The puppet troupe is now very famous because of the publicity. The Nok puppet is performing.

Chaai is in prison for the criminally insane.

The Nok puppet takes a bow. There is rapturous applause.

Chaai is scratching pictures of puppets on the stone wall of his cell.
