A man struggles with depression after being abused at a reform school only to succumb to his dark thoughts leaving his family to seek justice.
SYNOPSIS:
35-year-old ANDREW MARIANO, and his beloved dog DJ, named after his best friend who died years ago, move back to his parents, LANCE and TAMMY’s, home in New York. Andrew and Tammy have the closest mother/son relationship anyone could have.
Andrew scrolls social media stumbling on an article stating reform school Ivy Ridge is shut down and being investigated. All the suffering and pain from his reform school days come flooding back. He flees to his sanctuary—the gym. While working out, Andrew’s memory of his sexual assault taunts him which we see in quick flashes.
Andrew comes home to discover DJ keeled over. He falls into a depression after DJ is put down and asks Tammy to go with him to see a therapist. Over time, the therapist delves into the multiple issues plaguing Andrew. It doesn’t help that Andrew and his brother have a falling out over money. Soon after, Lance kicks Andrew out of his childhood home to fend for himself leaving Andrew all alone with his thoughts.
Making matters even worse, the anniversary of Andrew’s best friend’s death is always a struggle for Andrew. He and his buddies go to the bar and drink to honor their friend where Andrew lays eyes on the woman he wants to marry, but, IZA, from Ecuador, is not without her problems as she was pimped out by her father as a teenager. Iza’s son still lives in Ecuador and she is trying to get him to the States. In the midst of Andrew’s budding romance his depression is growing more intense to the point he confesses his sexual assault to his therapist only to consume all his antidepressants afterwards. Thankfully Tammy shows up to Andrew’s apartment and forces Andrew to eat in order to soak up the medication.
Andrew focuses on his relationship, giving Iza a promise ring and informs her he wants to use his crypto currency to bring her son over. But everything comes crashing down when Andrew and Iza get into a fight because Iza is stuck in Andrew’s apartment with him all day and unable to run her errands. Fed up, Iza calls a friend to pick her up but not before stealing Andrew’s crypto currency then blocks Andrew from all communication. This situation exacerbates Andrew’s depression and he spirals.
Andrew calls Tammy wanting a hug. She arrives to Andrew’s apartment finding him despondent and sobbing. Andrew tells Tammy what transpired with Iza and reveals his sexual assault. He expresses how much he wants "them" to pay for what they did to him. Tammy comforts her son and after tidying up his apartment, reluctantly returns home.
The following morning Andrew visits Tammy where Tammy tells Andrew Iza isn’t the only girl in the world. But Andrew insists they understand each other because he’s damaged and broken and she’s damaged and broken. Andrew says he has to go. Tammy instinctively knows why and pleads for Andrew to stay. Andrew leaves and parks his car on train tracks. When the town siren goes off, Tammy drops to her knees. She knows it's because of the train. It’s soon confirmed. Once at the hospital, Tammy and Lance learn Andrew has broken ribs, collapsed lungs, severed spine, is brain dead and on life support. They make the heart wrenching decision to donate his organs.
After the funeral the neighbors show up at Tammy and Lance’s house to plant a tree in Andrew’s honor. Tammy visits Andrew’s grave and says she will bring Andrew justice, somehow. Tammy befriends other reform school survivors and becomes their collective surrogate mom. They call her Mama T. Tammy emails her elected officials, attends a protest at City Hall with survivors demanding accountability and reform school change. Tammy talks to Andrew by his tree stating she is tired from the fight but is making progress and justice is coming. It is then a white feather floats down to her feet. She reaches down and picks it up holding the feather to her heart. Her eyes close as a tear escapes her eye. She looks up to the sky knowing her beloved son is watching over her.
