JOSEPH

JOSEPH
By Marina Albert

GENRE: Historical, Drama
LOGLINE:

Sold into slavery by his brothers, a young shepherd interprets Pharaoh’s dreams and is bestowed the kingdom’s highest honor, giving rise to greatness and leading his family to salvation.

SYNOPSIS:

With a face touched by divinity, Joseph may be a gift-from-God to his parents, Jacob and Rachel - but his ten half-brothers see the favored son, as a 'sheep among wolves'. Just as the young shepherd grows in virtue, so does their bitterness. Not only do they reject Joseph, but scheme to destroy Jacob's love for him. But they can't hide their black hearts from the centenarian - whose age-worn eyes have seen all there is under the sun.

When Jacob presents Joseph with a coat 'fit for a king', he doesn't count on new-found pride taking root in Joseph's heart. His dreams of greatness. In despair of unfulfilled prophecies, Jacob sends his ten sons to Dothan, to graze his treasured flock. Distrustful of his brood, Jacob dispatches Joseph to keep an eye on them. Instead of a reunion, Joseph discovers treachery in a pit set for him by his own kin, before being sold to a travelling merchant - bound for the Egyptian slave markets.

The chosen one becomes an unwilling orphan - stripped off his varicolored coat and identity. Crippled by betrayal and body riddled with splinters, Joseph finds solace in God-given dreams - and a blind, African androgyne. The pair make strange bedfellows, each fostering their own grief, in a cart overflowing with fellow Semites - oblivious to the 'Land of the Pharaohs' eternal wrath of shepherds. If not for Potiphar, the king's level-headed guard - their fate would be inexorably sealed by the unbending Pharaoh. Desperate to assuage Pharaoh's unfeasible expectations of perfectly-constructed temples, Potiphar dismisses his wife's advice and witchery - hoping to find gifted hands among the new intake of shepherds. But with a handicapped 'flock' at his disposal, Potiphar's hopes sink faster than a defective plumb-line - until Joseph acts on God's command to 'Feed my flock' and devises a flawless plumb-line.

Impelled by immortal unions with the gods, Potiphar's wife cues Joseph in her licentious cross-hairs. Appearing as an apparition, she accosts a naked Joseph returning from a night's swim. By virtue of divine intervention, he escapes her enchantments, but not her accusation of defilement. Despite his wife’s outlandish claims, Potiphar reluctantly imprisons Joseph. Inflamed by nightmares, Pharaoh summons a potpourri of necromancers to interpret them. They prove to be full of hot air, until Potiphar produces a prisoner, who not only defies Pharaoh, but interprets his nightmares. From Joseph’s revelation, Pharaoh learns of the coming seven year famine.

Pharaoh and Potiphar marvel at Joseph’s greatest engineering feat - an aqueduct that spans the Nile valley - ready to stave off the famine. Elated, Pharaoh installs Joseph as governor over all of Egypt. No longer forsaken, Joseph reaps a further harvest - a wife, worthy of God himself. As the famine takes hold, Jacob orders his incompetent brood to Egypt, to buy grain. Joseph recognises his brothers, accuses them of being spies and promptly throws them in prison. As much as it grieves him, he learns of a brother he's never met - Benjamin.

Distressed to the point of collapse, Joseph retreats to the desert - to an unexpected audience with his God. He returns to the city - frees all but one of his brothers, on the condition they bring Benjamin to him. The band of brothers stumble upon Jacob in Bethel, grieving at Rachel's burial site. To allay his grief, the brothers uncover grain sacks - overflowing with coins. But gold only fuels Jacob's rage. At first opposed to handing over his youngest son to a foreign governor, Jacob finally relents - placing all his trust, in his God’s hands.

After putting his brothers through a series of tests, Joseph finds reborn hearts. Hearts that would sooner sacrifice themselves, to save one of their own from a potential life of slavery! Joseph gives-in to forgiveness, before revealing his true identity - their long-lost brother! With his two young sons on board, Joseph leads a troop of chariots and wagons to Bethel - to an overdue family reunion. Though now blind, Jacob heaps eternal praise on the 'God of his forefathers’.

Seeking revenge against Joseph, Potiphar's wife becomes one-with-the-gods and summons a demonic serpent from the earth’s black bowels. En route to Egypt, ahead of the Canaanites’ resettlement, Joseph's chariot is besieged by the entity - intent on his destruction. By virtue of divinity, Joseph blinks-away invisible scales and spots the ‘heat-seeking missile’ under the earth.

He wrenches the reins, sends the chariot careening in a hair-raising ride, much to the delight of his young sons. Potiphar's in the midst of his own otherworldly battle - against the instrument commanding the serpent - his own wife! A novice in spiritual warfare, Potiphar is determined to fight against the demonic forces. With his life-force bleeding out, Potiphar emulates Joseph - rasps a heart-rending cry to God. And is heard!

Pharaoh and Potiphar consider the Canaanite’s exodus from aboard their chariots. Once reviled, Jacob's tribe of shepherds are received into Egypt's fertile arms. Inspired by a Canaanite who pushed himself beyond all human endurance, Potiphar lifts his eyes heavenward - and is rewarded with a glimpse into a shepherd's heart. Joseph - a black sheep borne across his shoulders. Hair and beard ripple in the breeze. Lost to the vision, Potiphar is oblivious to Joseph paying homage to his newfound humility - before merging with his flock. Never to be divided again.
