IN THE CHILL OF THE MORNING

IN THE CHILL OF THE MORNING
By Paul Glen Neuman

GENRE: Mystery, Comedy
LOGLINE:

In a comedic homage to In The Heat of The Night, Marshall Arts, a black security specialist from Ohio, reluctantly teams up with Clark Barr, the bigoted Chief of Police of Ball, Mississippi to solve a series of brutal murders.

SYNOPSIS:

All black security specialist Marshall Arts wants to do is travel by bus from Chicago to New Orleans to attend a law enforcement convention.

Following an altercation with his bus driver, Marshall is kicked off the bus in the middle of the night and stranded in Ball, Mississippi, a town that prides itself on keeping certain traditions of the Old South alive and well.

Turns out the local police have just discovered three bodies at the side of the road–big toes tied together with string and, with suspects in short supply, Marshall soon finds himself arrested for the murders.

To police Chief Clark Barr, it's an open and shut case. Marshall's a stranger, he has a wallet full of cash, and his tall tale of getting kicked off the bus is more than a little suspicious. It's only after Barr gets a quick look at Marshall's badge that he realizes Marshall is not his killer.

Barr orders Marshall from his office so he can sort out the mess of the bogus arrest. By the time Chief Barr emerges he discovers that, in the intervening minutes, Marshall has solved a double homicide cold case, and that one of his deputies is responsible for the murders.

With three new homicides on the books, and with his deputy roster suddenly reduced by one, Chief Barr, mistakenly believing Marshall to be a genuine police officer, ropes the reluctant Marshall into helping with the investigation.

Figuring he will never make it to New Orleans for the law enforcement convention if he doesn't assist Barr, Marshall and the bigoted police chief soon have their hands full as bodies pile up at an alarming rate, and Marshall finds his own life in danger.

Once it is determined that all of the victims owned property they refused to sell to a mysterious unknown buyer, the trail leads to Bubba Hubba, the richest man in town whose longing for the South's good old days borders on the obsessive.

By the time Marshall's ready to leave Ball, the murders have been solved, Chief Barr learns of Marshall's true identity as a mall cop in Illinois, and Marshall has the opportunity to save the life of Eve Ho, a beautiful Amer-Asian who agrees to drive Marshall to New Orleans.

As Marshall and Chief Barr part as friends, Barr extends an open invitation to Marshall to return to Ball should he ever want to be a policeman for real.
