BLUE DEVIL
By Jay Blumenkopf

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE: The headmaster of an elite prep school is willfully blind to its football coach’s sexual abuse of players over a 25 year span because the football program raises millions of dollars for the school. Based on a true story.

SYNOPSIS:

Growingi up I played sandlot football in Brooklyn’s Marine Park. The wealthy kids attended Poly Prep. I went to public school. I admired the Poly guys. They wore blue blazers and rep ties. Their football duffle bags were new. Not worn and patched like mine. This was the late 60s. Something changed. Each of the Poly guys, except for the ones that quit the football team, which I could not conceive of because football was everything to us, became shadows of their former selves. The ones that quit would never say why .Boys who continued to play football, boys with golden futures, became men who were fuck-ups. Alcoholics. Druggies. They could not maintain relationships. Had trouble holding jobs. One I knew killed himself. It wasn’t until 2012 when a federal judge released details of a lawsuit that I learned that Poly football coach Phil Foglieta sexually abused his players from 1966 to 1991 when he was given a big retirement dinner in honor of his accomplishments and the millions of dollars his football program generated for Poly Prep. Blue Devil is a story about my friends..
