A man and his daughter navigate surreal virtual worlds, the apocalyptic Philadelphia streets and a repressive tech corporation's surveillance state to reunite years after he abandoned his family for a supposedly utopian metaverse.
SYNOPSIS:
As drones install more and more Eggs along Philadelphia's streets, DANIEL PRY loses faith in the real world. Infinity Canvas is the shining virtual reality city on the hill that will save him. Or so he thinks when he abandons his wife, MONICA, and their unborn child by signing a lifetime contract to enter the metaverse operated by ubiquitous tech giant The Company. Monica decides to raise her daughter, LILY, alone in the desiccated city, and she vows to never let them succumb to the temptation of The Company's fantasy escape.
Sixteen years later, Lily finds joy in the bleak world around her by painting murals on the Eggs that line every street. The pods for Infinity Canvas metaverse residents are nothing more than canvases. That is, until Monica takes Lily to Daniel's Egg. Monica isn't supposed to know its location — or how to disconnect the underground wiring — but she does thanks to a disgruntled The Company employee's tip. Separated by inches but a world apart, Lily wishes there was some way to set her father free.
After realizing the magnitude of his mistake, Daniel spends years trying to escape. He finds a kindred soul in FRANK, and the two follow leads through the beautiful, odd and dark corners of Infinity Canvas to find hackers who claim to offer ways back to the real world. Their failures leave Daniel hopeless and withdrawn, and he contemplates "coma-mode," in which The Company turns off his consciousness but keeps his body alive.
A chance encounter with LAMAR, a young genius who's figured out how to hijack Eggs of the recently deceased, gives Lily passage into Infinity Canvas and hope of getting Daniel out. Frank tracks down Daniel to tell him the rumor that Lily is searching for him, and they set out to find her. Unbeknownst to Daniel, Frank is one of The Company's AI-powered spy bots, and he's been using Daniel as human cover to sniff out illegal activity inside the metaverse. When the two sides find each other, Lamar and Lily peg Frank as a spy bot, and they narrowly escape. Back in Philadelphia, they convince Monica to help them free Daniel, despite her anger over his abandonment and the risk of reprisal from The Company in the real world and the virtual one.
Monica disconnects Daniel's Egg and he wakes inside. With his vitals offline, The Company's AI monitoring system assumes Daniel is dead and sends two drones to open the Egg and remove his body. Monica, Lily and Lamar ambush the drones and bring Daniel home. Though Monica isn't ready to embrace Daniel's return, Lily convinces her to give him a chance at redemption. Finally reunited, with the addition of Lamar, the family makes a plan to avert The Company and escape to Monica's parents' farm in rural Iowa. They feel certain the worst is past, though Candace, The Company's Siri-like AI personal assistant, appears on a digital screen as the story ends with an urgent message stating warrants have been issued for Daniel, Lily and Lamar.
