EPISODE 14, SYNOPSIS, ARRIVEDERCI AMORE MIO
It is 1521, and Marguerite d’Alençon, sister of the King of France, meets with French reformers and discloses her plan to save thousands of lives by stealing gold intended to pay Swiss mercenaries in war against Rome. The theft sabotages her brother’s war and is treasonous but conforms with her love for the Church and Christ.
In Milan, gold mysteriously disappears, and France loses the Battle of Bicocca against papal forces. Thousands die anyway.
In Scotland, John Stewart, Duke of Albany, and second in line to the throne, returns from a lengthy trip to France where he arranged for a future bride for the young James V.
Queen Margaret surprises him with a flirtatious attempt to end their hostilities. They begin an affair in the hopes that Lord Stewart will help her get a divorce from her adulterous husband, Archibald Douglas, who is arrested and imprisoned.
A staunch Catholic, Scottish Archbishop Beaton introduces Latin in the form of Canon Law to the instruction routine of James V, King of Scots. His tutor, Maddalena de’Medici, sister of Pope Leo X, helps with the instruction as it would strengthen James V to defend the Church as an adult.
Queen Margaret, who is forbidden from seeing her son by Regent Beaton, conspires to help Lady-in-Waiting, Janet Stewart, a bastard daughter of deceased James IV, to form a relationship with her half-brother, James V. Janet Stewart joins the happy class in learning Latin and gets to meet her half-brother.
In England while teaching at Cambridge, William Tyndale is arrested for reading the Bible in English. He is betrayed by Henry Phillips, a friend, and is arrested by Bishop Tunstall, whipped, and released with a strong warning. Phillips is rewarded in silver.
In Rome, Pope Leo X contracts malaria. Maddalena is called back from Scotland to say goodbye. The Medici family and intelligentsia of the Church meet to celebrate Leo’s birthday and victory over Francis at Milan, but Leo suddenly dies. His lover, Antonio, says, “Arrivederci Amore Mio.”
In the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V meets with his tutor Cardinal Adrian Boeyens, the next pope.
